Tess McCabe and her new book 'Graphic Design Speak'

As a graphic designer Tess McCabe has spent the past ten years designing up a storm with various government, small-medium business and not-for-profit organisations. She's the director and event coordinator at Creative Women's Circle (CWC) - a community that offers information, inspiration and ideas to women in the creative industries - and runs her own publishing company, Creative Minds Publishing.

As if that weren't enough, Tess also has a number of her own published books under her belt. All in a day's work for this Melbourne-based designer.

Her latest book is just what people who work outside of the the creative industries, but interact regularly with designers and creatives, have been crying out for - a book that cuts all the jargon out of graphic design and explains it all in simple, everyman language.

Graphic Design Speak: Tips, Advice and Jargon Defined for Non-Graphic Designers aims to tone down the technical talk and explain how it all works to non-graphic designers.

It's a remarkably well-designed book, filled with superbly-written and descriptive explanations, alongside beautifully illustrated examples of quality design. It eloquently demystifies and simplifies the graphic design process for people who may need to use a graphic designer from time to time but find the whole thing a bit confusing.

As Tess herself put it when speaking to Life Instyle, "often [people] are confused as to why a printer can't use their website banner on a business card, or they don't know what to send when a journalist asks for a high-resolution 300 dpi image of their work. So in response I have compiled a basic guide to the most common terms and concepts relating to images, file types, colour and paper sizes."

Printing something as pleasing on the eye as this book was a lot of fun for us. The cover was printed on beautifully textured 270 gsm Neenah Environment Desert Storm card, while the pages are a lighter 120 gsm EcoStar stock, a 100 per cent post-consumer recycled paper.
