Get people excited about your event from the get go

Promotion is an important part of the lead up to your event, grab your megaphone and tell the world. Also, don't underestimate the power of a good poster or flyer to spread the word. It's here, right at the start, that you can decide on your theme, colours and style that will tie your whole event together. The right  graphic design will convey the right message so people are engaged right from the start.

Team up with an environmentally friendly printing company (hello, nice to meet you) and get your posters and flyers printed on recycled paper stock and vegetable based inks. These materials, as well as efficient and economical methods, keep the planet in mind.

If you're sending out invitations, these too can be printed with paper from sustainable sources and vegetable based inks.

Bring the sailors on board

As well as employing the services of a clean, green printing company, it's a good idea to team up with like-minded individuals who will help you create an eco-friendly event.

For instance, when looking for a venue, see if there are any that already practice environmentally friendly processes when hosting. You can also find caterers who use organic, locally sourced ingredients. Companies that offer a number of vegetarian or vegan options are a good start. Also venues that have their own solar power or at least purchase green power.

Create your venue space

When decorating, instead of buying everything you need, hire what you can. This includes furniture, if you need to supply tables and chairs, as well as decor items such as material, lighting and table centre pieces.

You can also hire cutlery and crockery instead of buying paper plates and napkins as well as plastic knives and forks. Not only will this reduce the amount of waste created by your event, this will give the impression that your event is professional, elegant and well put together. If you're set on using disposable options, find biodegradable kitchenware - those made out of sugar cane are a great choice. You can also serve up primarily finger food, which will cut out the need for plates and cutlery entirely.

Eco-friendly candles (made out of beeswax or soybeans) can come in a variety of shapes and sizes and create the perfect mood lighting and ambiance. However, wherever you can, use natural lighting. Even if this means bringing your event forward by a few hours, it will be worth it. Not only will you save on power, but your event can take place in that delightful hour of twilight - this is a free way to create a charming atmosphere.

You can also use potted herbs and flowers to make your event extra special and add life into the room. Instead of using cut flowers for a centre piece, opt instead for bowls of bright, seasonal fruit. If your colour theme is red and blue, you could fill a bowl with blueberries and raspberries. Then you'll also have something to snack on when you're cleaning up!

Is your venue out of the way for most people? Set up a transportation option such as a bus or two, or provide green taxis that guests can take from the city to your event. This will cut back on carbon emissions and has the added bonus of making it easy for everyone to find where the event is and get excited for what is about to take place!
