The Guide to Bariatric Surgery combines information and design

The Guide to Bariatric Surgery
In 1995 bariatric surgeons Professor Jim Toouli and Dr Lilian Kow put together Adelaide's first obesity clinic, the Adelaide Bariatric Centre. In 2010, surgeon Dr Jacob Chisholm was introduced to the team. These three work alongside practitioners, dietitians, exercise physiologists and nurses, who all have an understanding of what these patients need. There are also psychologists on hand to look after both the mind and body.

Since its opening the centre has performed 4,000 bariatric operations. The team stands by the fact that health comes from eating nourishing food rich in minerals and nutrients as part of a balanced diet, as well as being active.

The Centre has teamed up with The Bird Collective who are leaders in design. This company has a studio in Melbourne where they create quality, well designed pieces in a variety of mediums. The artists put together high end wedding videos and short films, as well as illustrations and art. The Bird Collective signature is on advertising and art alike.

The Guide to Bariatric Surgery

Designers at The Bird Collective have helped the Adelaide Bariatric Centre to release a booklet: The Guide to Bariatric Surgery. This booklet is made to be accessible to those who are unsure of what the Centre does and is beautifully designed. The colour scheme is cobalt blue in a watercolour style.

The entire design is fluid and effortless, helping to make the information easily accessible. Inside, sub-headings guide readers to the exact information they're looking for, or take them through overview of everything. To break up the text and provide further understanding of the procedures, there are pictures in blue in the same watercolour style. The cursive writing and calming colours help to relax the reader into understanding the ins and outs of bariatric surgery.

Both the health of the human body and the environment has been kept in mind - the booklet has been printed on 100 per cent recycled card with vegetable based inks.
